Our History

Norfolk 1934

With over 74 years of proven success, we are committed to growth, full service and to efficiency through excellence and the highest standards of honesty and integrity.

AFFILIATED FOODS MIDWEST traces its roots to Plainview, Nebraska. In 1931 a handful of independent grocers exploring the advantages of pooling their purchases, formed a wholesale buying group.

In 1936 the firm relocated to Norfolk, Nebraska under the name of General Wholesale.

Following a fire in 1968 the distribution center was rebuilt and the name was changed to Affiliated Foods in 1977.

A 35,000 square foot transportation department was built in 1989 and the next year marked the completion of another 120,000 square feet of warehouse storage area with 46 new docks.

In June, 1991 we broke ground for a new 30,400 square foot freezer addition for ice cream & novelties and 12,500 square feet for equipment storage.

In 1996 a 55,000 square foot addition was completed for cross docking full pallets and repack expansion. The next year installation of new racking in the warehouse was completed.

In June of 1999 the 400,000 square foot Affiliated Foods Distribution Center in Elwood, Kansas was purchased, our new name became Affiliated Foods Midwest Cooperative.

Also in 1999 a 35,363 square foot freezer addition was added, doubling the frozen food & ice cream departments.

Presently our facility at Norfolk has a roof area of approximately 20 acres which equals one million square feet of floor space. The next year a 25,000 square foot area for meat, deli and bakery was completed.

Our distribution centers in Norfolk and Elwood are among the most modern, aggressive, efficient and high tech cooperative distribution centers in the entire Midwest! Each year our capital improvements are approximately $2,000,000 to $3,000,000.
